Senior Ashley Hermanson of Monroe was a unanimous choice on the 2010 WBCA Division 2 All-State Team.
Hermanson is a key reason the Cheesemakers are making their third straight state tournament appearance this year. The 6-0 senior averaged over 11 points and 7 rebounds per game for a Monroe team that went undefeated in Badger-South play and carry a 25-1 record into the state tourney. She shot 59% from the field and committed just 28 turnovers in 26 games while providing outstanding leadership. Hermanson is a repeat first-team selection from last year.
The rest of the Division 2 team consisted of Jamie Armstrong, Monroe; Ashley Backes, Wittenberg-Birnamwood; Kelsey Budd, Sauk Prairie; Katie Gonnering, Freedom; Kathryn Koeck, Winneconne; Morgan Lee, Hayward; Katie Raymond, Westfield; Samantha Schoeder, Durand; and Janelle VandenPlas, Luxemburg-Casco.
Jamie Armstrong teamed with Hermanson to give Monroe the best inside duo in the state. The 6-2 senior is headed to George Washington on a volleyball scholarship and averaged 11.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.5 blocker per game.
Ashley Backes of Wittenberg-Birnamwood was a key figure in the Chargers’ 24-2 season that included a run to the sectional finals. The senior’s 17.3 points per game were part of the highest-scoring team in Division 2.
Kelsey Budd from Sauk Prairie was the engine that made the Eagles go this season on their way to a share of the Badger-North crown. The 5-9 senior averaged 19.9 points per game while also setting up teammates with outstanding passing skills.
Alana Cesarz of Delavan-Darien is a repeat selection on the All-State team as just a junior. The 6-2 forward averaged 20.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per contest for the Comets this season.
Katie Gonnering of Freedom battled injuries to help lead the Irish to a perfect 18-0 mark in the Eastern Valley Conference and 23-2 record overall. The 5-10 junior averaged 13.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season and was an honorable mention All-State selection last year.
Kathryn Koeck of Winneconne helped lead her team to a 24-3 overall record and a state tournament berth. The 5-10 senior does a little bit of everything for the Wolves and averaged 13.9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3.7 steals per game this year. Koeck will head to Marquette University and participate in track and field.
Morgan Lee from Hayward was the go-to player for a Hurricanes squad that won the Heart O’North conference with a 14-0 mark and finished 23-2 overall. The 5-7 senior averaged 18.9 points per game this season and will play college basketball at Winona State (Minn.).
Katie Raymond of Westfield is a repeat first-team All-State selection after leading the Pioneers to a share of the South Central conference title and a 22-3 record. The 5-9 senior averaged 21.1 points per game.
