WBCA D3 Boys All-State Team

Senior Evan Richard of Cuba City is the lone unanimous selection for the 2010 Division 3 WBCA All-State team.

Richard led Cuba City to a 24-2 record and to a share of the championship of the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League (SWAL) with Darlington by averaging 23.3 points per game. An athletic 6-foot-2 wing guard, Richard can score from downtown, off of pull-up jump shots or by using his strength and skill to get all the way to the rim. Richard will play college basketball at Milwaukee.

The rest of the division 3 team consisted of Jordan Reetz, Fall Creek; Ben Stelzer, Manitowoc Roncalli; Alex Erickson, Darlington; Steve McWhorter, Racine St. Catherine’s; Ryan Sygulla, Whitehall; Cody Odegaard, Poynette; Troy Huff, Brookfield Academy; Daulton Levra, Hurley; and Cody Hanke, Marathon.

Reetz led Fall Creek to the title in the highly competitive Western Division of the Cloverbelt Conference by averaging a team-best 17.6 ppg. Like Richard and Stelzer, Reetz is a repeat first-team all-state pick by the WBCA.

Stelzer excels in Roncalli’s motion offense because of his ability to make perimeter jump shots and find open teammates. The 6-1 combination guard averaged 22.3 ppg and led the Jets to a 21-4 record and a share of the Olympian Conference championship with Valders.

Erickson moves up from a spot on the honorable mention all-state list a year ago after averaging 21.2 ppg and leading the Redbirds to a share of the SWAL title and a 21-4 overall record.

The lone returning starter for a St. Catherine’s squad that won the Division 3 state title last season, McWhorter did it all for the Angels. The Indiana State recruit led St. Catherine’s to the state tournament for the fifth time in the past six years by averaging 15.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 4.9 apg.

Sygulla used his physical strength and basketball skill to help Whitehall to a share of the title with Blair-Taylor in the Dairyland Large. Sygulla scored 30 or more points nine times this season and averaged 26.3 ppg while leading Whitehall to a 17-5 record.

Odegaard used his versatility and skill to help Poynette register an upset victory over Cuba City in the sectional semifinals. Poynette fell to Blair-Taylor in the sectional title game despite 34 points from Odegaard, who will play college basketball at NCAA Division III power UW-Whitewater.

Huff emerged as one of the elite college prospects in the state as a senior when he averaged 22.2 ppg for a Brookfield Academy squad that went 19-7. The North Dakota University recruit is equally effective off of drives to the basket or making mid-range jump shots.

Levra led Hurley to the title in the Indianhead Conference by averaging 24.4 ppg. The ultra quick point guard weaved his way in and around defenders in northern Wisconsin for four seasons under coach Gary Giancola.

Hanke was a key player for a Marathon squad that went 26-1 and went unbeaten in the Southern Division of the Marawood Conference. A 6-3 forward, Hanke averaged a team-best 17.3 ppg for the Red Raiders.
